Home renovations in Cambridge

Cambridge has some of the most characterful housing in the region, from stone and brick homes along the Grand River in Galt to the family neighbourhoods of Preston and Hespeler. We have renovated here since 2007, and our Waterloo shop is about half an hour away.

About 30 minutes from our Waterloo shop. Also serving Kitchener and Waterloo.

What we renovate in Cambridge

The same six services we offer everywhere, delivered by the same crews.

Cambridge homes we know

Nearly two decades in the region means we have usually renovated a house like yours before.

Heritage homes in Galt

West Galt, East Galt, Dickson Hill, the downtown core

Stone and brick homes with thick walls, original trim and layouts from another century. We plan plumbing and structure around what is there, and we know when heritage approval may apply, for designated properties and for homes in the Dickson Hill and Main Street heritage conservation districts.

Preston and Hespeler villages

Preston, Hespeler, Blair

A mix of older homes and mid-century builds. Kitchen openings, ensuite additions and finished basements are the common requests.

1980s to 2000s family homes

Clemens Mill, Fiddlesticks, Southwood, Westgate

Solid two-storeys with dated kitchens and small ensuites. Whole-main-floor reworks and primary suite renovations transform these houses.

Newer subdivisions

River Mill, Hespeler North, East Side

Basement finishing, built-ins and kitchen upgrades to bring builder-grade homes up to how your family lives.

Permits, suites and the Cambridge rules

Every city in the region runs its building department a little differently. Here is what matters in Cambridge.

Permits in Cambridge

Applications go through the City of Cambridge's City Application Portal (its Application Navigator builds a project-specific checklist). Cambridge does not publish a review timeline, but Ontario's 10-day timeframe for a complete house permit application applies. Cambridge requires a permit for adding or removing walls and for new or wider window and door openings, but not for kitchen or bathroom cupboards without plumbing or for replacing windows the same size. Electrical work is permitted and inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority, not the city.

Cambridge has three heritage conservation districts: Blair Village, Dickson Hill and Main Street, and a Galt Core district was in planning as of the city's latest update (November 2025). Designated properties and district homes may need heritage approval for exterior changes.

We prepare the drawings, submit the application and book every inspection. See our permit guide for the full list of what needs a permit in each city, with 2026 fees.

Basement apartments and additional units in Cambridge

  • Cambridge allows up to three units on a lot with a detached, semi-detached or townhouse: up to three in the house, or two in the house plus one in a backyard building.
  • The rules sit in section 4.19 of Zoning By-law 26-007, in effect since February 3, 2026, which also sets parking and entrance requirements.
  • The City and Region do not collect development charges on these units; the school boards may.
  • The City lists a one-time ARU grant of up to $10,000 toward water and sewer upgrades, permit drawings, labour and materials. Confirm current funding with the city.

Details, code requirements and grants are in our basement apartment guide. Rules checked October 2026.

From a client

I recently reached out for a project that I wasn’t sure how to complete, and was put in touch with Chad from RTC. He was so communicative, friendly, and helpful. He followed through on everything he said he would do, at the time he said he would do it. His crew was equally as professional on site. The quote for the work was fair and the quality of the work was great. Exactly what I had asked for.
